EARTH GEMS; A STUDY IN WOOD, STONE AND TIME
After a successful 11 years devoted to an equine painting series, I felt it was time to explore a new direction and perhaps a more abstract way to express myself, only to be thwarted by displacement and dis-ease. Although these life challenges slowed my process, they ultimately enriched it in ways I had not anticipated.
These surprising “gifts and shifts” changed my philosophies, my priorities and my way of seeing. I now have a capacity for actually living in the present with a new found appreciation and joy. I discovered Nature was my Nuture.
Being grateful for borrowed time, I have slowed time to contemplate the preciousness of nature …by painting it.
Although the paintings initially emerge from my personal photographs, what begins as detailed observation eventually progresses from trusting my intuition and instinct. Sometimes things appear on the canvas from memory, which always astonishes me, how visual experience is stored in the unconscious mind.
Rather than trying to impose a singular interpretation of my paintings, my hope is that viewers engage with the work on their own terms, inspired by both the tangible and the magical intangible.
